I was about three and a half or four years old and visiting Aunt Josephine, my mother’s sister. She and her family lived in a modest house with a rear porch that looked out onto an average-size, gently sloping backyard. One sunny afternoon, she said, “Daniel, why don’t you go outside and play?”

“Okay, Aunt Jo,” and I went out the doors that faced the backyard. I found things to do—look around, kick a ball, swing on her swing set, things like that. I also saw that in the middle of the yard was a board, about two feet long and a foot wide. It was just lying on the ground. After running around for a while and eventually getting a little tired, the board looked like a good place to rest for a spell. I went over and plopped down.

After a few seconds, the board began to vibrate, and I heard a peculiar buzzing sound. The sound grew louder. I thought this rather strange, so I stood up and looked down at the board. Out from under it, a honey bee appeared. Then another. And another. And another. They kept coming, more and more of them! Fascinated by the sight, I watched what they did. They exited the colony, flying out in a curved line like a length of rope, and gathered into a cloud several feet above me. There were dozens of them! Suddenly, I remembered something: bees can STING! Alarm bells went off—I was in trouble!

As you know, honey bees will defend their hive to the death. Fast as my legs could go, I ran for the back door! The host zoomed after me, and the swarm was relentless in its pursuit! Like miniature combat planes peeling off to make dive bombing runs, they came down and rat-a-tat-tat, began stinging me! I had never been stung by a bee before! Ow, did each one hurt!

I scrambled onto the porch and pounded madly on the screen door, “Aunt Jo, Aunt Jo! Help! Help!”

Luckily, Aunt Josephine was near. She heard my cries and in seconds was at the door. Opening the main door and seeing through the screen door the cloud of attacking bees swirling around me, she realized at once what was happening. “Daniel! Oh, my goodness!” She jerked me inside with one hand while frantically shooing away the bees with the other.

Aunt Jo tried to discover my condition. “Daniel! Daniel! Are you hurt? Are you hurt? Where–?”

By this time, I’m doing the water works hard, crying and gasping for air between sobs. She then saw how my arms, neck, and legs were peppered with bee stings. “Oh, my goodness!” she exclaimed again.

She picked me up and ran me upstairs to the bathroom. She stripped off all my clothes to learn the full extent of the attack. There were at least a dozen stings! Using a pair of tweezers and a bottle of calamine lotion (a pink/salmon-colored fluid useful for skin irritations like itches and insect bites—and bee
